HISTORY:
Nearly three thousand years ago, AR-N-O-Q was a Green Lantern who gave his ring to an alien on a distant world.
AR-N-O-Q's Successor (a Green Lantern with a name that cannot be spelled in any human alphabet) retired after the so-called Crisis on Infinite Earths. The Guardians of the Universe sent the retiring Green Lantern to a world in the fifth sector of the globular cluster known as Valstan C5. There he was to find his successor. The Green Lantern did not wish to retire, but it was the Guardians' will. He would have perferred to die as a ring wielder.

Trying to scan the planet for a worthy individual, the scanning field collapsed upon itself. The Green Lantern tested the functions of his ring, but there was nothing wrong with it.
He was puzzled. The Guardians had detected a strong, pure, mind source on this world. The ring was unable to isolate the possessor of the powerful intellect because the floating fuzzballs were a tiny part of the intellect. The dominant lifeform was a hive intelligence.
The Puffball Collective was controlled by a large cluster of puffballs. This "queen" was of limited intelligence, incapable of becoming a Green Lantern. He discovered the "queen" absorbed her food by ensnaring it in the cluster. The "personality" and "intelligence" of the absorbed lifeform was then transmitted to each of the billions of puffballs.
Realizing the Puffball Collective could absorb the power battery, the puffballs could each become living power rings. The only thing they lacked was the intelligence to use the power. The Green Lantern dove into the cluster, and was absorbed.
The sector of the Puffball Collective was then a very safe one. It is the only sector regularly patrolled by over one billion Green Lanterns.
