FIRST APPEARANCE:
GREEN LANTERN 2nd series # 55
(September, 1967)
"Cosmic Enemy Number One"

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Human male, brown hair, brown eyes

KNOWN RELATIVES: Roger (brother, deceased)

HISTORY:

Charlie Vicker was an actor who portrayed Green Lantern in a TV show on Earth. Vicker led a fast paced lifestyle with parties every night. His brother, Roger, was his understudy in the role of Green Lantern.

One day, Roger had to fill in for Charlie, who had been unable to work after one too many parties. Playing Green Lantern, Roger was killed during the live broadcast.

Watching the TV show, Hal Jordan the actual Green Lantern, saw Vicker struck down. Jordan visited the set, to see if the impersonation had anything to do with the attack.

Jordan soon discovered the death was part of a plot by a group of cosmic criminals, intent on destroying the Green Lantern Corps. Scores of Green Lanterns had been struck, thirteen had been killed, including Davo Yull of Pharma and Chogar of Tyrea. The criminals had killed Roger, thinking he was the Green Lantern of Earth.

Charlie Vicker felt responsible for his brother's death. If not for his irresponsibility, Roger would have stayed alive. He wished to help in finding his brother's murderer. Green Lantern could not take him, but implanted a signal in his brain in order to contact Vicker wherever he was.

Hal Jordan joined with Chaselon, Katma Tui, Tomar-Re and other Corps members to track the murderers to the Guardians' prison planet. Jordan was soon trapped by the criminal Ashez of Jubelo in the ruins of a yellow metal lined space craft.

He was unable to contact his fellow Green Lanterns for help, instead he used his mental link with Charlie Vicker to teleport the actor to the prison world. Vicker was then able to free the Green Lantern from the space craft. Jordan was about to return him to Earth, when Vicker beseeched the Green Lantern to allow him to help in the battle.

Picking up the power ring of a fallen comrade, Jordan had appointed Charlie a temporary Green Lantern. So impressed were the Guardians of the Universe with Vicker's ability, they officially inducted him and assigned him Space Sector 3319.
[GL2 # 55-56]

Vicker again met up with Jordan during the war against Krona and Nekron. He appeared quite happy with his assignment. This did not last long.
[TGLC # 1-3]

With his sector lacking any form of humanoid life, Vickers had misgivings about being a Green Lantern.

After averting a disaster on Axelbob III, Charlie Vicker was distressed when instead of getting thanks from the life forms on the planet, they treated him with disgust.

The more aliens he saw, the worse he felt. Although he could visit Earth, he would always have to return to Sector 3319.
[GL2 # 157]

He was ordered by the Guardians to save the planet Ftl'yl XI from destruction. He saved the insect-like inhabitants of the world, and was surprised to find they considered him a hero. An alien hugged him, showing her child that the Green Lantern had saved. He realized despite their outward differences, they were very much the same.
[GL2 # 157-158]

Years later, in a story told to neophyte Green Lanterns by their trainer, Kilowog of Bolovax Vik, it appeared Vicker was despondent once more. He fought against the Tebans, who were massacring the population of Hwagaagaa. Although he was not on Oa when it occured, after the execution of Sinestro and the collapse of the Main Power Battery, Vicker was stranded on the alien world. He was now powerless.
[GL2 # 222-224, GLCQ # 3]

Charlie Vicker used the great dramas of Earth to teach the natives about strength, resistance, pride, and sacrifice in order to fight off their enemies.
[GLCQ # 3]

After the destruction of the Green Lantern Corps, John Stewart was chosen by the Controllers for the Darkstars. To fill the void left by the Corps, Stewart recruited a number of former Green Lanterns, including Varix, Galius Zed, Hollika Rahn, and Charlie Vicker. Their first mission was to Talyn, a planet which had been devastated by Psi-Mon.
[DSTAR # 27-28]

The Darkstar from Earth appeared to have gotten on the wrong side of Regional Director Prigatz of the Darkstars. Prigatz had great difficulty believing Vicker had served as a Green Lantern. Vicker was sent to Beta Mandibus to investigate reports of a pack of drone ships. Though Vicker arrived too late to see the ships, they would be found on Earth. These ships were Kraggz, the "bloodhounds" of the Tormocks. They had come for the last Vuldarian, Guy Gardner aka Warrior.
[DSTAR # 29, 31, GG # 31-32]

Charlie Vicker was later given the advanced Darkstar armor with its built in power supply. He was one of the few active Darkstars after the Controllers repossessed their energy from the Darkstar organization. Vicker was killed in the Battle of Rann, defending that world from the armies of Grayven, the third son of Darkseid.

'mouse note -

This one's dedicated to Proteus242, simply because he asked (and I can charge him for it :) )

The strange thing about Charlie Vicker is why after the Crisis, when the Guardians abolished the one GL per sector rule and said the Green Lanterns could go wherever they felt like, would Vicker stay in a sector devoid of humanoid life? Why didn't he join the GLC of Earth, or any other group with humanoid members?

Yeah, I know, it wouldn't be much of a story if he did... anyway, he joined the Darkstars....
