The Green Lantern Movie.

Summer has always been the time for big movie blockbusters. Unfortunately, Green Lantern is one of the few "DC Big Guns" who has never received a solo, live-action media presence. Superman and Batman had their movies, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Captain Marvel had their television shows, but Green Lantern never graduated from SUPER FRIENDS.

It's understandable, then, why a casting call for a Green Lantern movie is one of the most popular and hotly-contested GL topics on the Internet. Everyone has his or her opinion as to who should play whom, how flashy the special effects can be, etc.. but in Real Life (assuming a GL movie is ever made, more on that below), unfortunately, we are at the whim of the director.

The purpose of this "Role Call" was to let the readership itself decide on the actors and actresses who could bring our favorite legend to life on the big screen. From July 14th to August 14th, the casting polls were open...

And the results are in!

Several dozen people took part in the vote, producing a myriad of choices ranging from today's top billers to the obscure actors of yesteryear. In some cases (Abin Sur) the result was a landslide, while others remained neck-and-neck right up to the end (Carol Ferris). The runners-up were as follows: Hal - Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford; Carol - Demi Moore, Sandra Bullock; Jack - Kevin Costner, John Travolta; Abin - Michael Jordan, Val Kilmer; Tomar-Re - Jim Carrey, Will Smith; Kilowog - John Goodman, Michael Dorn; Salakk - Bruce Willis, Mark Hamill; Legion - James Earl Jones, Arnold Schwarzenegger; Guardians - Danny DeVito, Sean Connery.

You can click on the film reel in each "marquee" to see an .avi morph of the character and the actor (Legion and the Guardians of the Universe were both elected to be creations of Industrial Light & Magic, so their actors would provide a voice only). All files average about 450K. Clicking on the actor's name will take you to their complete filmography, as provided by the Internet Movie Database.

Kevin Smith announces stuff at VULGARTHON '98!!!

Well lo and behold on the day prior known as the day of
Tues, people assembled in a magical land known as New
Jersey to partake in... VULGARTHON '98!!! And
weeeeeeeelllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll, of course I
had the spies on hand, and here is their report.

The first guy named DUBA... (ummm... o..... k....) had
this to say...

My brother and I just returned from Kevin Smith's
Vulgarthon '98. During a Q & A session, Kevin let us in
on two cool things. The first is that Jason Lee has been
asked to portray Azreal in Smith's forthcoming film Dogma
that should begin filming in March '98. The second tidbit
is that Warner Brothers have asked him to write the script
for DC's Green Lantern movie that is in development! He
couln't really tell us anymore about G.L., I just wanted
to share this cool new with you! Keep up the good work!

Batman 5 and Green Lantern

More confirmation came today that Batman is not dead,
but merely sleeping.. Warner’s is going to take it’s
time letting the Bat out of his cave again, but that
Schumacher was told by Warner execs to make a
movie that would sell merchandise. Well it has sold
$125 million in merchandise, and a mere $110 million
or so at the box office. Of course a great Batman film
would have doubled or tripled those numbers, and I
think that is sinking into Warner noggins. Also this
fella says that there is a Green Lantern project
floating around at Warners.

I WANT TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT WHERE THIS PROJECT
IS AT!!!! I love this character, and want to see him
done justice ala the Gil Kane version. Once again sorry
if you like the Golden Age or Guy Gardner version, I
prefer Gil’s Green Lantern.

Where the Green Lantern Project is at!!!

Meanwhile I got this word on the GREEN LANTERN project
from the Paisley M & M.

"Last I heard it was at Silver Pictures. A draft had
been written by Alex Zamm which stunk and everyone had
pretty much given up on it, but that was some time ago.
The Warner mandated approach--use the ring to make as
many outlandish hammers, boxing gloves and giant bugs
bunnies as possible--failed miserably. Perhaps they
learned a lesson from Batman 4 and have changed
direction."

Well personally I like big green outlandish hammers,
and I want good ol Sinestro with his reddened David
Niven-ish face and yellow power ring. But then I love
my dagdum silver age comics.
