PROBERT

HOMEWORLD: unknown

SECTOR: unknown

FIRST APPEARANCE:
GREEN LANTERN CORPS QUARTERLY # 8
(Spring, 1994)
"Bad Intentions"

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Male humanoid, purple skin, black hair

KNOWN RELATIVES: none

HISTORY:

A mercenary, Probert (also known as "The Bad One") was approached by a Guardian of the Universe to "repossess" the power ring of Green Lantern Kkrudd of LaBurb. Kkrudd had taken control of his planet and captured Poola Sidd, whom Probert had a past relationship with, as his personal concubine.

To help even the odds, the Guardian offered Probert a power ring and battery. The ring was the conduit of power for the battery, but Probert refused it. He would manage without the power, and besides that, he didn't wear rings.

Probert quickly realized Kkrudd's ring was more than a match for his abilities. He wished he had listened to the Guardian, and with that the lantern appeared. After Probert, in desperation, commanded the lantern to "give him the juice", he was able to utilize the green energy as if he was wearing a power ring. He easily beat Kkrudd, and took the Green Lantern's ring.

The Guardian returned to take custody of the rogue Green Lantern. He requested the power from Probert, but the mercenary decided he would keep the power which was now within his body. The Guardian agreed with this option. The Oans would monitor the actions of Probert and keep his services on retainer. Probert still wouldn't wear rings.
[GLCQ # 8]

Probert was a friend of Green Lantern Graf Toren, and took care of Toren's body in accordance to the late Green Lantern's wishes. It was at this time that he met former Green Lantern Guy Gardner, now known as Warrior.
[GG # 20]

Gardner met Probert once more, in deep space, battling the Tormocks. "The Bad One" rescued Gardner from the attacking Tormocks. Probert had seen the destruction the Tormocks had visited on others. He relished the opportunity to inflict massive damage to the aliens.

Despite the Justice League's assistance, the heroes were unable to prevent the Tormocks and their allies, the Leechun, from abducting Guy Gardner.
[GG # 33]

Probert, Hawkman, and Diana caught up to the Tormocks on the Vuldarian homeworld. In the years since the Vuldarians' defeat, the Tormocks had remade the ancient homeworld as the center of their empire.

The trio rescued Gardner from Empress Karine of the Tormocks. She had hoped to "convince" the Vuldarian hybrid to breed with her, renewing the Tormock bloodline.
[HWKM3 # 23]

Faced with thousands of enemies against them, Gardner and his group planned to attack. They were joined by an unlikely ally, Lobo. The bounty hunter had his own reasons to fight the Tormocks.

At sunrise the warriors descended upon the fifty legions of Tormocks and their allies. Probert literally fought his way through Slabb, one of the elite Tormock assassins.

The tide of battle was turned with the arrival of the Devourer, one of Karine's genetic mutations. The battle field was cleared when the creature sucked the Tormocks into its maw.

The final vengeance was claimed by Gardner. As the vessel of justice for Cardone, an ancient Vuldarian, Gardner killed Bronkk, leader of the Tormocks. The heroes survived and reunited with the Justice League.
[GG # 34]

The current activities of Probert are unknown.

'mouse note -

Created by Guy Gardner writer Beau Smith, Probert The Bad One was named in tribute to Bob Probert, once of the Detroit Red Wings now with the Chicago Blackhawks. According to Beau, both Proberts are major head busters.

It’s hard to get a bead on when Probert was a Green Lantern. I don't think it was recently, and he does seem to have an almost first-hand knowledge of Vuldarian/Tormock history which may predate the Guardians.

I can understand why Probert didn't, but why didn’t Kkrudd wear a version of a GL costume? Probert and Darkstar Ferrin Colos knew each other prior to their meeting in GG # 20, though earlier meetings have yet to be recorded.

Lastly, does Probert still have a reserve of "green energy" from his meeting with the Guardians?
