The Petition
"Bring back the GLC!"

I'm pleased to announce that, as of April 24th 2000, there have been 3954 signatures to the GLC petition, with more added every day. Hal fans, Kyle fans, and Corps fans all laid down their John Hancock. Here are just a few samplings of what the signers had to say:

"The current Green Lantern carries on the name but not the tradition and courage that Hal Jordan stood for. While Ron Marz has written some very fine stories, he does not capture the magic and science of the series the way that Gardner Fox, John Broome and Steve Englehart did. Making Kyle the only Green Lantern separates him from what made the Corps strong: the sense of family and belonging."

"I like Kyle Rayner as a character [...] However, the current course of the series makes him virtually indistinguishable from Spider-Man, the Ray, Firestorm, and most other single-character male hero books outside of the Superman and Batman stables.

As demonstrated in the Faster Friends miniseries, Green Lantern shares a place with the Flash as the heroes who embody the concept of Legacy. As the Flash, Wally West carries the earth-bound torch lit by Jay Garrick and then passed on to Barry Allen. In the same manner, Kyle Rayner carries the space-bound torch lit by Alan Scott and passed on to Hal Jordan, John Stewart and Guy Gardner -- and the 3600 other Green Lanterns who were once the galactic defenders of the DC Universe. Kyle's legacy came from the stars."

"While I generally like the Kyle Rayner character I think that the Green Lantern Corps was a unique feature of the book and added elements of mystery and variety that are all too absent in a lot of mainstream comics these days. By all means bring back the Corps. Just the process of figuring out how to do this would be a positive move for the book."

"I definitely agree that the Green lantern corps was one of the coolest things DC had going and I don't see why the old must always be demolished to make way for the new."

"Although I like Kyle and the new stories that are being told, I miss the old Corps. Isn't there room for both in a cosmology as varied as the DCU?"

"I never touched an issue of GL BK (before Kyle.) But the fact that Kyle is the only GL in the universe feels a little empty, especially after collecting some Hal Jordan back issues. Bring back G'nort!!!!!"

"As a retailer, I'm really getting tired of watching some of my best customers feel so disfranchised by DC policy. We need Hal Jordan back if we want the industry to return to a profitable position."

"I've been an avid reader of comics since I was in elementary school, and as I grew older my tastes changed and so have the comics I've collected, but one series of titles I've always been faithful to, is Green Lantern. Even despite the things that have happened, right up until Hal died. But his death marks the end of wonderful age, one that I will truly miss and one that didn't have to end. Some try to convince me that I've outgrown comics, but I can still pick up old issues of GL and feel like I understand what they say, like they have a message more than just some flashy children's soap opera action hero like so many other comics today. I try to read the new issues and comics today, and very few of them stir that same feeling anymore. GL was one of the rare comics that still did, but I can't even be certain of that anymore. I truly believe that limiting the story to only Kyle and Earth is a mistake, especially for a theme like Green Lantern, which has so much more potential, to see it limited to just one person. Maybe I'm just one fan, one person, one little adult voice that stands hardly of chance of being heard among the mass of millions of children and teenagers that purchase the comics as well, but I think they deserve the chance as well to be able to hold the same feelings that I have for comics once they're older, rather than looking back on it as some childhood toy or fad. You're holding a great title in your hands, please . . give it the full spectrum and range of flavor it deserves, the rich and wonderful stories all of us long to see again."

"The Green Lantern was the most unique comic available. It was at once a superhero comic, and a forum for incredible science fiction stories. It seems tragic that it is now just another superhero comic, indistinguishable from any other."

"The possibilites for creating additional stories with the Corps are virtually without limit. It would be an ideal forum for any creative team."

"The GLC is one of the great heroic concepts of comics, a concept that has inspired writers from John Broome to Steve Englehart to Gerard Jones to Alan Moore and artists from Gil Kane to Joe Staton to Pat Broderick to produce some of their, and DC's, finest superhero stories. I believe it still holds sufficient power and scope to inspire the next generation of creators as well."

"The GLC is akin to the Jedi Knights, mixing adventure, science fiction and philosophy. Their loss is deeply felt by all fans of the Green Lantern mythos, and their return could do nothing to harm the changes the present editorial team have wrought to the GL book. As Darkhorse continues to publish further books of the tales o the Jedi, it seems high time for their progenitors to come back. Variety is the spice of life, as the GLCQ book proved. Bring 'em back!"

"DC is probably the one company which has the greatest Legends in the Comic Industry, both by virtue of the characters and their history. It would be a shame to lose the grandeur and history of the Green Lantern Corps, especially at a time when other companies (Astro City, Supreme) are desperately trying to re-evoke the glory that DC effortlessly possessed."

"The GLC is a concept that should not be abandoned. The universe is a large and dangerous place that could use a cadre of powerful heroes dedicated to spreading light and justice over the Evil that seeks to oppress the races of the Galaxies."

"The GLC is a great concept and gives an excellent oppertunity for readers to explore the DC universe. I'd love to see it back!!!!"

"The Corps was always fun and exciting. New beings with a common thread."

"I'm a new reader of GL (started with Emerald Twilight) and would like to read more about the GL corps"

"I used to believe that I could enjoy a Green Lantern world that only involved Kyle; however, I soon started collecting back issues of the title, as well as old GLC Quarterlies, and I have now come to the conclusion that Green Lantern must involve Kyle, Hal, and the Green Lantern Corps."

"I have read the Green Lantern comics for almost 16 years. It is by far my favorite comic. I still like the series even with Kyle. But the death of the Corps? I think it is one of the great disasters of the comic book industry."

"While the Kyle Rayner character is likable, I have really come to hate the direction of the book. Spending more than half of each issue on Kyle's babysitting duties and girlfriend problems is, I think, beneath a character with as rich a history as Green Lantern. I for one would welcome the return of Hal and the Corps (and besides, no one ever really dies in comic books, right?) and think both he and Kyle could easily co-exist in the current DC continuity."

"Return the grandeur, return the epic adventures we all loved. Bring back the Green Lantern Corps and return Hal Jordan to his righful place at the head of the Green Lantern table."

"No other comic book had anything like the Green Lantern Corps (whose inspiration lay largely in material outside the realm of most current fandom, like E.E. Smith's "Lensman" series). I want to see the real Hal Jordan and the Corps back."

"Not only do I want the GLC back, I also want Hal Jordan back."

"I have followed Hal Jordan since the old Super Friends cartoon. It killed me to see that one of my favorite heroes had gone bad in Zero Hour. This was very uncharacteristic of the things he has done in the past, and for me, not acceptable. Before this I had not had a forum to express the way I feel. The DC Universe needs Hal. Without Hal, the DCU feels empty."

"I've enjoyed Hal Jordan since I was a kid watching the old Super Friends cartoon. However, I am one of those few who don't dislike Hal's demise. I think his insanity and subsequent death were quite believable. I was only afraid that DC would make him a lame villain that popped up from time to time to do nothing more than annoy whoever held the ring. But please, put me on the petition to bring back the Corps. There are definitely more stories to tell."

"I have been an avid comic book collector since I was 10 years old. Being 22 now, that is over half my life. Hal Jordan was the only reason I ever started collecting. He was my idol. He was the standard on which I based an adult male. To have treated a HERO with such disrespect is wrong. Some things SHOULD never change."

"I hated to see Hal go, after all the adversity he bore. For me, he truly represented the superheroic ideal at its most fascinating and most fraught."

"Add my name and $ to a re-constituted GLC. More importantly, it's about time us 40+ folks have a hero that we can identify even if it means smashing the established order."

"I not only dropped GL, but all DC books. Why? After you destroyed royed the JSA, turned GL into a psychotic murderer, and killed Green Arrow, I decided that these were not comics I wanted anything to do with. A return of Hal and the GL corps would be a step in the right direction."

"We need heroes, ideals and examples of how to rise above ourselves, to strive for something better. Too many of the heroes in real life are found to have feet of clay. Comic book characters don't have to have fatal flaws, just flaws that they overcome heroically."
