HISTORY:

Living in the United States in the late 1700s early 1800s, Waverly Sayre had hoped to settle down with his wife and raise a family. Unfortunately, this was not to be the case. Sayre's wife, Peg, died in childbirth.

The long months were hard on him, filled with nightmares. Depression and loneliness had worn Sayre down, and he believed life was no longer worth living.

Sayre was visited by the emerald projection of his wife and child. He believed their spirits had reached from beyond for him to join them in death. The projection did not want Sayre's death, in fact it gave him an emerald ring.

The ring transported Waverly Sayre across space to an alien world. He believed the aliens were devils that had taken Peg and the baby. The aliens told Sayre he had come to stop the invasion of their world. Millions had already been killed, including Laham, their Green Lantern. As Laham died, his ring had reached across space to find Sayre. The ring had projected Laham's final thoughts to Earth.

Using the ring, the Earthman fought off the invading forces and earned the thanks of the alien world as the new Green Lantern. The voice Waverly Sayre thought was Peg's was actually Satoon, the widow of Laham.

Returning to Earth, Waverly Sayre became something of a mystery to his neighbors. He was never seen in town and his fields were never plowed. The only light from his cabin was the glow of the Green Lantern.

The final fate of Waverly Sayre remains unknown. An alien, Starkaor, became Green Lantern after Sayre, but if Starkaor is a direct successor or not has yet to be revealed.
[LEGENDS OF THE DCU # 20]

Earth would not see another Green Lantern until 1873, when Abin Sur of Ungara bestowed the power ring on Daniel Young of Bailysville, Montana.

'mouse note -

Waverly Sayre may have been named after an exit on US 17 in New York State. Two towns, Waverly, New York and Sayre, Pennsylvania are on opposite sides of the state line, near the Susquehanna River. Thanks to David Dieteman for this info.

Based on Waverly Sayre's surroundings, I'm guessing he became a Green Lantern in the late 18th/early 19th century. It is possible Waverly Sayre died in the 1860s, and his ring was then passed to Starkaor who in turn passed it to Abin Sur.

I'd be interested in seeing a story in which Waverly Sayre meets Max Mercury (or Windrunner as he was known then)...
